This is general guidance, not legal advice. Disposal rules come from the transfer station, landfill, and hauler — and from New York State rules (especially for electronics). Always ask when you book if you're unsure about an item.
Usually Not Allowed in a Standard Roll-Off
- Liquid paint, stains, solvents, thinners, and other flammable liquids
- Motor oil, antifreeze, and other automotive fluids
- Gasoline, propane tanks, and other pressurized cylinders
- Car batteries and most household hazardous chemicals
- Tires (often accepted only through separate tire programs)
- Asbestos-containing materials and medical / biohazard waste
- Explosives, fireworks, and ammunition
Restricted — Ask Before You Load
- Electronics (TVs, computers, monitors, printers): New York restricts landfilling of many covered electronic devices. Ask about recycling drop-off or a separate pickup — don't bury them in a mixed dumpster load.
- Appliances with refrigerant (refrigerators, freezers, AC units, dehumidifiers): often accepted only with a fee and proper handling. Tell us before delivery.
- Mattresses and box springs: often allowed with a per-item fee.
- Railroad ties, large stumps, and extremely heavy single pieces: may need a different container or be refused.
Usually OK (Confirm Weight Limits)
- Furniture, mattresses (may carry a fee), and household junk
- Construction and demolition debris: drywall, wood, flooring, cabinets, trim
- Roofing shingles (usually best in a smaller container because of weight)
- Yard waste, branches, and landscaping debris
- Concrete, brick, block, and dirt (in a container sized for heavy loads)
- Metal, siding, windows, and doors
Paint Cans — A Common Gotcha
Dried latex paint (lids off, absorbent material added until solid) is often accepted as regular debris. Liquid paint is not. When in doubt, take leftover liquid paint to a household hazardous waste event run by Orange County or your town — don't pour it in the dumpster.
Why This Matters in Monroe & Orange County
Loads that arrive at the facility with banned items can be rejected or reclassified at a higher rate. That cost comes back to the job. A 30-second call before you toss something unusual is cheaper than a rejected haul from a Monroe, Kiryas Joel, or Highland Mills driveway.
Better Options for Banned Items
- County / municipal household hazardous waste collection days
- Retail take-back for batteries, bulbs, and some electronics
- Scrap metal yards for clean metal
- Junk removal when you want a crew to sort and haul mixed household items the right way
